My wife and I are approaching another Anniversary! Many people ask, “What does it take to make a marriage last?” I could tell you, but I prefer to put it in musical terms.
1) As Queen sang, “You’re My Best Friend” To have a Best Friend, you have to Spend Time with each other.
Deuteronomy 24:5 says, “If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and be happy with the wife whom he has married.”
A year off sounds amazing, huh?! It might not be possible, but the concept is still there. It’s important to make time for each other.
This is the Heart of God revealed when you spend time together. 2 becomes 1! Don’t take for granted what God has placed in your life. Take time to make time!
2) Be Willing To Lose Fights. Or, as Elton John sang, “Sorry Seems to be the hardest word”
It is hard to say sorry, but it shows humility, and honors your spouse.
In Philippians 2:3-4 it says, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in HUMILITY regard others better than yourself. Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.”
Look not to your own interests – But to each other.
3) Connect With Christ Daily
Another less known prophet of music is Matthew West who wrote a song called, “Jesus and You”. The Bible says, “a Cord of three strands is not easily broken.” How do you connect with Christ daily?
–Pray together (family prays together, stays together).
–Read the Bible or a devotional together.
–It’s important to get involved at a church together.
That Matthew West song, Jesus and You, says,
“Why, you’ve got a ring around your finger
While he’s got scars on his hands
Why you both promised me forever
God, I’ll never understand
But when I think about the only things in life that pull me through
I hit my knees and thank the Lord for Jesus and you”.
“Marriage takes three to be complete. It’s not enough for two to meet.” You must be united in love by love’s Creator, God. A marriage that follows God’s plan takes more than a woman and a man.
It needs a oneness that can be only from Christ—Marriage takes three.
Take time together – You’re My Best Friend
Be willing to lose fights – Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
Connect with Christ daily – Jesus And You
Keep harmony in your marriage. Go make a difference. Always, run by faith!
