I saw this article about creating a family mission statement and why it can be so good for families and I wanted to share it with all of you! Here’s a summary of the steps they suggest to create one with your family…

Start by calling a brainstorming session! It is so important to get the whole family involved in order to capture the essence of the entire family. You can make your brainstorming session fun with paper and pencils, a dry-erase board/markers or post-it notes for everyone!

Explain what your goal is and why you think it is important for your family and what you hope to accomplish with your mission statement. Collect everyone’s ideas. And if members are struggling, here are some questions to help:
What is the purpose of our family?
What kinds of things do we want to do?
What kind of feeling do we want to have in our home?
What kind of relationships do we want to have with one another?
What are our family’s priorities?
What are our responsibilities as family members?
How can we contribute to society as a family and become more service-oriented?

Next it is time to write your mission statement! You don’t have to narrow it down to just one value – or even a few! Everyone in the family should feel represented within the final mission statement. Once everyone is satisfied with the final copy, post it where everyone can see it!

Remember that your statement is not set in stone! The values we prioritize change over time, so make it a practice to regularly revisit and adjust your statement if you need to.
